What to Wear to an Indian Wedding in Australia: A Guest's Guide

Indian weddings are joyful, colourful and often spread across several days. If you have been invited to one in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth or anywhere else in Australia, you might be wondering what to wear to each event. This guide walks you through the main functions, the outfits that suit them, and a few practical tips for dressing for Australian weather.

First, check how many events you are invited to

Many Indian weddings include a mehndi, a sangeet, the wedding ceremony and a reception. Some couples host all of them; others keep it to one or two. Your invitation will usually list each event, and sometimes a dress code or colour theme. If it doesn't, it is perfectly fine to ask the couple or a family member what they would like guests to wear.

Mehndi: bright, relaxed and comfortable

The mehndi is where the bride has henna applied, and it is usually the most relaxed event. Bright shades such as yellow, green, orange and pink are traditional. You will often sit on low seating or cushions, so choose something easy to move in.

  • A palazzo suit is ideal: breezy, comfortable and festive.
  • A cotton salwar suit or a printed muslin set keeps you cool at a daytime or outdoor mehndi.
  • Keep sleeves loose or short if you plan to have henna applied yourself.

Sangeet: dress to dance

The sangeet is the music and dance night, and it is the time to have fun with your outfit. Look for movement, shimmer and a little sparkle.

The wedding ceremony: traditional and elegant

The ceremony is the most traditional part of the celebrations, so this is the time for rich fabrics and classic outfits. Silk, georgette and embroidered pieces are all good choices.

Ceremonies can be long and sometimes involve sitting on the floor, so comfort matters as much as looks.

Reception: glamour and shine

The reception is usually an evening party, and guests tend to dress up the most. Deeper jewel tones, sequins and embellished fabrics all fit the mood.

Colours to think twice about

  • Red: traditionally the bride's colour in many communities, so guests often avoid it for the ceremony.
  • All white or all black: in some communities these are linked with mourning. They are more acceptable at a modern reception, but check if you are unsure.
  • Anything close to the bridal party's colours: if the family has chosen a theme, match the mood rather than the exact shade.

Pastels, jewel tones, and bright festive colours such as pink, teal, mustard, emerald and royal blue are almost always a safe choice.

Dressing for Australian weather

Indian weddings in Australia happen all year round, and the weather can vary a lot between cities.

  • Summer in Perth, Brisbane or Sydney: choose breathable fabrics such as cotton, chanderi, muslin and light georgette. Palazzo suits and shararas let air circulate.
  • Winter in Melbourne, Canberra or Adelaide: heavier silks and velvet-look fabrics feel great, and a matching shawl or a longline jacket over your outfit keeps you warm between venues.
  • Outdoor events: block heels or embellished flats are easier than stilettos on grass.
